Mundy Junior School, Heanor
The Mundy Junior School is a pilot project between the Consortium and Derbyshire
which brings together new technology to create a high quality teaching environment.
Derbyshire County Council is the lead designer supported by the Consortium’s Concept
Architect. Skanska are the contractor.
The layout picks up the themes of the DfES exemplar design for primary schools,
in particular the design developed by Sarah Wigglesworth. The teaching accommodation
is separate from the hall and ancillary accommodation. Two links join the blocks
together, one containing a computer suite, the other a library resource area.
The teaching space is divided between a classroom and resources area. Careful
consideration has been given to acoustics to maintain the quality of the teaching
environment.
Research has been carried out with WSP to devise the optimum classroom design.
Acoustics, daylighting, ventilation and temperature have all been modelled to
ensure the best teaching environment. Mechanical extract has been used to ensure
CO2 levels are minimised and that night time cooling can be introduced when the
windows are closed and secured.
Technology has been developed to increase the prefabricated elements in the external
wall. A clay block faced panel developed by FIS Systems Limited has been used
together with a unitised window from Kawneer. Special attention has been given
to the routing of services and the layout contains movable walls all to make the
spaces adaptable. The project contains measures to protect the environment including grey water
harvesting.
Completion is expected August 2005, which will be within the planned time frame.
